Electrician
Salaries for electricians have made a significant leap in 2022. Pay rates increased between 9-20% in one year for this skilled trade.
We know that in Canada, demand in the construction industry is high. In Adecco’s January 2022 monthly jobs and employment report, we saw that the construction industry was the main driver of employment growth. The demand for skilled tradespeople such as electricians is likely tied to growth in the sector. As such, it’s not surprising to see a large increase in salary for these skilled workers.

Retail Sales Staff Member
Out of all the jobs listed in this blog, the retail sales staff member has the second smallest salary increase. Annual compensation for full-time retail staff members increased by approximately 2-3% in 2022.
The retail industry was undoubtedly hit hard by pandemic-related health and safety restrictions and had negative employment growth in January 2022. The industry faces tough hiring challenges, and the relatively small increase in pay rates this year suggests that attracting and retaining employees will continue to be a challenge for employers. This is especially likely considering that, according to the Government of Canada’s Job Bank’s detailed analysis of retail salespersons, there will be fewer job seekers than there are job openings over the period of 2019-2028.

Web Designer
From 2021 to 2022, web designers saw the smallest increase in annual salary, rising by only roughly 1 - 3%.
The small rate of change may be partially attributed to the wide discrepancy of technical knowledge among web designers. The supply of entry-level designers with basic web design skills (accepting lower salaries) is much larger than that of experienced designers able to perform complex, high-level programming (accepting higher salaries).
The Government of Canada’s Job Bank’s analysis of web developers and designers projects that employment will grow at an above average clip in this occupation. As technology advances rapidly, we can expect demand for the profession to rise in the years ahead.

Order Picker
Salaries for order pickers have risen approximately 2-7% since 2021, which, in comparison to the other jobs on this list, is a modest increase.
The relatively low increase may be partly due to there being slightly more job seekers than job openings in this profession, according to the Government of Canada’s Job Bank’s analysis.

As more and more businesses transition to online, remote work, demand in the information technology industry has gone up accordingly. As long as the remote working trend maintains its popularity in the post-COVID labour market (and there’s good reason to believe it will), we can expect that hiring within IT sector will stay competitive.
